7 steps to quickly generating traffic to your site

What is more important to your Business?

Long term relationships or long term traffic?

In marketing online there is a difference. Social media marketing is about being in a conversation. You have to engage your customers. This is a long term commitment that will pay off long term dividends as you establish yourself as an expert in the field and network yourself into relationships. Stop working it and you are quickly forgotten.

Search engine optimization builds Long term traffic but it takes time to get established and work to get good rankings.

With this article I will try to give you a jump start to the types of activities you can do to increase traffic and to increase your rankings in the SERP’s.

SEO is based on 3 principals.

1. TOPIC: Every page must have a singular topic with copy that supports the topic. This includes related keywords being used on the page. The title of the page is what establishes the topic.
2. REPUTATION: Each link from within your site must use the keyword that defines your topic when it links to the page. If you link using the wrong word you confuse the engines.
3. CONFIRMATION: Links from 3rd party sites must use the same keyword topic when linking to a page. This confirms for the search engines what the page is about.

  • Spend the time needed to get the right keywords. Write titles, descriptions and related keywords for each page.
  • Install a text link at the bottom of each page linking to a site map. On the site map link every page topic to the appropriate page.
  •
  • On all links that go to password protected pages or pages that don't need to be found: IE contact us, search and terms and conditions, put a <nofollow> tag from every page. This stops the engines from giving the Google juice to them.

Now the work begins.

1. Set up and make a commitment to blog. Something like blog.yourdomain.com Add at least 2-3 posts per week. Here are the minimum requirements for writing a blog post.

Match the SEO plan pages/keywords to the topic of the post.

  1. The post must have a title that includes but does not start with the keyword phrase.
  2. The post must be at least 100 words.
  3. The keyword Phrase must be included in the post.
  4. The keyword phrase can not start or end any paragraph.
  5. Must be conversational.

2. Set up a linked in account. Use the links in it to link back to your site. Use a keyword, not just the default my website. Here is a sample - mine. http://www.linkedin.com/in/terrylmickelson  Download the toolbar. Search your contacts from the tool bar and invite everyone. In a week or 2 you will have a decent size network. Start searching for people in the businesses you want to connect to. Want to reach the CEO of ReMax or Intel? Search and ask.

3. Create a Facebook page and invite friends/family to be your friend. Add your blog's rss feed so that every time you post to it, it appears on Facebook. Makes it "in your face" book.

4. Search for blogs at http://blogsearch.google.com/  Make a comment on related blogs. Where it asks for your name, use a keyword and link back to your site. If you make good intelligent comments that get you in the conversation webmasters have no problem with this. Spam them and you are wasting your time.

5. Sign up for twitter. Put your twitter address in every email sig file. Search for others in the industry. Follow them. Tweet frequently letting your personality come out. Don't try sell anything or put links to your site in all of your messages. Set this up on your phone and tweet a couple times per day. This is about building relationships 140 characters at a time.  http://twitter.com/pageviews

6. Post to Craigs List http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites  Pick a county, pick a city write an ad. Make it fun. Tell people about what you have to offer. Post in the appropriate section(s). Make each ad unique or they get flagged and you get banned.

7. Rinse and repeat. Depending on how fast you write, you should be able to start driving a bunch of traffic and links to your site within a couple of weeks at no cost other than 10+ hours per week.

These instructions are not meant to be all inclusive of every site and were originally written for a company that is in the business of Real Estate Auctions.

New Google SERP Features | WebProNews

Google has just announced 2 new improvements to Google Search. The first is an expanded list of related searches, and the second is the addition of longer search result descriptions.

The company says its deploying a new technology that better understands associations and concepts related to searches. Google explains:...one of its first applications lets us offer you even more useful related searches (the terms found at the bottom, and sometimes at the top, of the search results page). For example, if you search for [principles of physics], our algorithms understand that "angular momentum," "special relativity," "big bang" and "quantum mechanic" are related terms that could help you find what you need.Google says its able to target more queries, more languages, and make suggestions more relevant to what users are looking for.

We've heard Google talk about wanting to get better with intent-based search, and it looks like they're now doing something about it."Additionally, we're now offering refinements for longer queries — something that's usually a challenging task," says a post on the Official Google Blog. "You'll be able to see our new related searches starting today in 37 languages all around the world."As for the longer snippets, users will see them when they search for longer queries (which users are using more of these days).

They will display more text to show more of the keywords used in the query and how they are used on the page. These changes may not be the final word in intent-based search.

The "java" example discussed by Bruce Clay late last year isn't addressed very well here. The related searches suggested when I search for that keyword do not include coffee or country related items.

Still, the features are an indication that Google is indeed looking in this direction. The longer snippets feature is not exactly delivering more relevant results than before, but it could go a long way toward helping users determine if results in fact are relevant by giving them more info to reach a conclusion.

Building Links - A starter kit

Links can and should come from many different area. Companies who get stuck on directories, or link trades or blog posts or articles or.... the list goes on and on do not get the full benefit that links can produce. "In the wild" links come all sorts of sites and vary the anchor text. By creating a natural looking pattern of link building from many sources and techniques you can build faster and a wider base. If you want to do the project on your own I would suggest a combination of the following.

For each keyword you "must" be found for vary your anchor text 60%, 20% 20% This means that for every 10 links you receive only 60% of the links will use the most important words. It takes longer and more work but in the long run it will be worth it.

Build deep links and not just to the home page. "Every boat floats at high tide"

Link Building Tools

If you have to maintain links on the client site like reciprocal links I would use IBP It will help in your mailing/managing responses.

Use Fast Blog Finder to make blog posts. Use your keyword in the name field and you will get a link back.

Write and release an article it at the following 10 article directories. Include a text link using your anchor text in the author box.

Poor economy effects Yahoo Minimum Bids

Yahoo has announced the lowering of the minimum bid in certain categories for their popular Pay Per Click service.

Quoting the official Yahoo Search Marketing Blog, "Given that certain business categories have been impacted by the current economic conditions, we’ve reviewed minimum bid amounts on a large number of Sponsored Search keywords and reduced the minimum bids on many terms. This review process is a part of our ongoing efforts to optimize our search marketplace."

If in the past you had bid on terms and had a lower than required minimum bid that was high enough to fall under the newly revised minimums your daily spend may be increasing as the amount of traffic would be increasing with your additional terms. What this means to you is that if you log into your account you may be able to lower the amount you are paying for each individual click.

Lower costs for Pay Per Click advertising from Yahoo combined with performance based SEO from Page Views gives you a great one two punch for both PPC and Organic rankings.

Reputation management - Why you should be concerned

Any company that has been online for some time will eventually have an unhappy customer, supplier or investor who will post something negative about the company or it's executives. These negative posts then show up in the search engine results pages when a search is done for the company or executives name.

From time to time Page Views Interactive, an Arizona SEO company,  is asked to remove negative press, court actions or comments that are not favorable about a company or one of it's executives.  Removing negative press or comments is not as easy as many would believe. We can't call Google and ask them to remove it from their index or get anywhere by threatening legal action. This is an expensive process that takes time and a lot of effort.

Matt Cutts the well known official blogger of Google gets a lot of requests to remove such items. He posted the following on his blog.

Unfortunately there’s not much I can do. The page you pointed out is not spam, and pretty much the only removals (at least in the U.S., which is what I know about) that we do for legal reasons are if a court orders us. We typically say that if person A doesn’t like a webpage B, only removing page B out of Google’s search results doesn’t do any good because webpage B is still there (e.g. it can be found by going to it directly or through other search engines). In that sense, the presence of that page in Google’s index is just reflecting the fact that the page exists on the wider web.

The best actions for you from our perspective can be one of a couple options. Either contact whoever put up webpage B and convince them to modify or to take the page down. Or if the page is doing something against the law, get a court to agree with you and force webpage B to be removed or changed. We really don’t want to be taking sides in a he-said/she-said dispute, so that’s why we typically say “Get the page fixed, changed, or removed on the web and then Google will update our index with those changes the next time that we crawl that page.” Our policies outside the U.S. might be different; I’m not as familiar with how legal stuff works outside the U.S.

Matt says basically the same thing Google says in their webmaster tools. Most of us will not make it through life without someone not liking us. Sometimes the best answer is going back and doing what ever has to be done to make the person happy. In other cases it is best left alone. Not everyone will like you. Sometimes it is best to engage Page Views to drive the negative press off the first couple of search engine results pages. The best answer and least expensive answer id to retain us to create pages we can control that occupy the top 30 listings of the search results pages so when negative press hits, it does not take over the top spots.

Performance-Based SEO, Again

SEO is not a one-time effort - but a process that requires the consistent development of content, and an equal dedication to having others notice your efforts and recognize them.

It's easy to see why many consider SEOs to be nothing more than snake-oil salesmen. As I've mentioned in other posts on performance-based SEO, the challenge to selecting a vendor in the performance model space is recognizing that you are more than just a client - you become a partner.
